Last week Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra’s maternal grandmother Madhu Jyotsana Akhauri (née Mary John) 94, passed away. The funeral was held at St. Thomas Jacobite Church in Kottayam, Kerala.

Before that, Priyanka's grand-mom's body was taken to Kumarakom Parish for the funeral. But surprisingly, the authorities at the Kumarakom Parish refused to let the burial take place. They stated that it was against the rules as PC’s grandmother had married a Hindu family.

A church spokesperson said, “the church automatically disowns one under such conditions. She could have re-joined the church while alive. But once a person is dead, we cannot accept the body for burial,"

After that, the funeral was taken place at St Thomas Jacobite Church in Ponkunnam, Kerala.

Madhu Jyotsana Akhauri was born as Mary John in St John's Attamangalam parish in Kumarakom and had wished to be buried at the same church.

Shortly after the 94-year-old’s demise, Priyanka took to Twitter and stated that her nani would always ‘walk beside her’.

On the work front, the actress is also dazzling away her fans in her Hollywood film Baywatch, where she plays the role of a baddie named Victoria Leeds. The film also stars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron in the lead roles, and it will hit silver screens in 2017.
