Bengaluru: The 81-year-old Jnanpith awardee, actor and writer Girish Karnad on Monday (June 10) passed away at his residence in the city due to multiple organ failure.

Several political leaders posted their condolence messages on Twitter and praised Karnad for his contribution to the country.

Taking to Twitter, former prime minister and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda conveyed his grief.

 

Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy also posted a tweet which said, "Deeply saddened to hear the demise of Jnanpith laureate writer and iconic actor/filmmaker, Sri GirishKarnad. His outstanding contribution to literature, theatre and films will always be remembered."

His tweet also stated that Karnataka had “lost its cultural ambassador.”

 

State BJP president BS Yeddyurappa, BJP leaders and several other political leaders from the state also posted condolatory messages.

 

 

 

Karnad breathed his last at his residence on Lavelle Road in Bengaluru at 6.30am.

He was suffering from a respiratory disorder and was recently seen attending functions with an oxygen mask for support.
