A battalion of Madras Regiment will create history by marching down the Rajpath during the Republic Day parade this year as it would be the youngest contingent to participate on January 26 celebrations.

Raised on May 1, 2017, Madras Regiment's 172 Infantry Battalion (TA) has been entrusted with the honour of representing the Territorial Army at the 2021 Army Day as well as Republic Day parades, within 2 years of its induction.

A defence official told Asianet Newsable, "The battalion will be the first to have 95 per cent strength of the contingent from a single unit i.e 172 Inf Bn (TA)."

They are the first set of youth to have arrived from Andaman at Rajpath, he added.

They are also called Nicobari Terriers, entrusted with the responsibility in Southern Group of Islands. This is the first TA unit to be employed in the amphibious role.
