Transgender unanimously elected as Gram Panchayat president in Mysuru

Setting an example, villagers in Saligrama Gram Panchayat in Myusuru's KR Nagar not just elected a transgender as a member but also declared her as the president.

The Panchayat limits has a population of about 25,000 and last month elected members to Panchayat. After a month, now it was other members who decided to make transgender Devika the president.

KR Nagar taluk JD(S) president Rajanna was instrumental in getting her elected from ward number 7 in Saligrama and based on the direction from MLA Sa Ra Mahesh, Rajanna ensured that all the other members unanimously elect Devika as the president.

Expressing happiness for being elected, Devika said, in all, four transgenders were elected as Gram Panchayat members in various parts of Karnataka but in her case, she was made the president.
