Couple sells 16,000 eco-friendly pencils to reduce felling of trees

An Indian couple who left to Indonesia had bid the country goodbye years ago but returned to Bengaluru to help save trees. The duo has introduced paper and flower seed pencils to help reduce dependency on trees to make the product.

Moved by the plight of trees being cut, the garbage issue and the city's environment taking a beating, an Indian couple who had settled in Jakarta, Indonesia, moved back to city to save trees.

The couple Akshata Bhadranna and Rahul Pagad, who have learnt that about 6 million trees are cut to make about 15 million pencils, began their initiative to make paper and flower seed-based pencils.  So far, the couple have sold 16,000 pencils and are hopeful of roping in a few schools and institutions to spread information and awareness about trees and the impact of using eco-friendly alternatives.

The couple also hold eco-friendly meets where people of similar mindset meet and discuss problems in attempts to resolve environmental issues.
