Bengaluru's BBMP sets precedent, imposes Rs 5 lakh fine for producing single-use plastic

Frustrated with banned plastic items being openly sold in BBMP limits, the palike attacked the source, that is plastic industries, operating in BBMP limits and imposed a whopping Rs 5lakh fine on a unit.

The BBMP launched an silent attack on industries making and supplying banned single-use plastic. To instil fear among such industries, the palike authorities on Tuesday morning rushed to Nandi Shree Plastics, a unit operating near Padmanabha Nagar in Bengaluru South and a penalty of Rs 5 lakh was imposed upon the unit

The authorities also seized all the banned single-use plastic items, machinery and have locked down the establishment. Before leaving the spot, the authorities provided the owners of the unit a few days to pay the fine.

It is said that the owner pleaded before authorities to consider his request either to warn him and let him go or reduce the fine amount as it was too big an amount to pay.

The Joint Commissioner of BBMP, Sarfaraz Khan has said that these industries which claim they are innocent or beg for pardon or to reduce the penalty cannot claim innocence. He argued that if at all they are innocent, there was no need to conduct this business secretly.
