Baisakhi 2020: Devotees visit Golden Temple despite CM's appeal amid coronavirus lockdown

The Baisakhi festival observes major events in the history of Sikhism and India that happened in Punjab

Amritsar: On the occasion of Baisakhi in Amritsar, Punjab, some devotees were seen at the Golden Temple (Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib) amid coronavirus lockdown. Chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh had appealed to the people to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi by staying in their homes. The devotees entering the temple were seen wearing a mask or covering their faces with handkerchiefs. They also got their hands sanitised before entering the temple.

Baisakhi or Vaishaki is an annual harvest festival that marks the beginning of the Sikh New Year. The festival is celebrated with enthusiasm and zest in Punjab and neighbouring states like Haryana. On this auspicious occasion, Gurudwaras are decorated and they hold keertans, while Sikhs take bath in the river or lake before visiting the gurudwara.
