The Tamil Nadu government extended the Covid-induced lockdown restrictions till 5 July. However, some Covid-19 restrictions have been eased in certain districts.

The ongoing lockdown was supposed to end at 6 am on 28 June. It must also be noted that there are nine cases of the new Delta Plus variant of coronavirus in Tamil Nadu.

Continuing with the tier system which was announced last week, the government has allowed shopping malls, jewellery stores, textile showrooms and places of worship to be allowed to open in Chennai, Chengalpet, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur, which have been put under the Tier-3 category.

While textile and jewellery showrooms can function till 7 pm with 50% capacity, malls will be allowed to remain open from 9 am to 7 pm with no air-conditioning. While private establishments can function with a 100% workforce, beaches will be open for walkers from 5 am to 9 pm. Cinema halls and restaurants will remain shut, with only takeaway and delivery services allowed.

In 11 districts - Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Karur, Namakkal, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai, classified as category I, the government has increased the business hours for permitted shops. Export units and their vendors can function with 100 percent staff strength. Other industries can function with 33% worker strength while information technology companies can work with 20% staff strength.

In the remaining districts, all classified as category II, shops and establishments can be open till 7 pm. Export units and their vendors can function with 100% staff strength. Other industries can function with 100% worker strength while information technology companies can work with 50% staff strength. Museum and other ASI-protected monuments can be open from 10 am to 5 pm. Travel to the Nilgiris, Kodaikanal, Yercaud, and Kutralam will be permitted only for emergency purposes, based on e-passes.
