Will you pay to read news on Facebook?
- Facebook reportedly plans a subscription-based news product.
- The plan to add a paywall has been in the pipeline for some time now.
- This would also mean another mode of revenue for Facebook.
Over the years, social media platforms come to the forefront when it comes to consuming news, especially Facebook. While Twitter has been the source of breaking news, Facebook has been catching up. The Facebook Live has added yet another feather to its cap when it comes to broadcasting news.
It was just recently that 2000 publishers in the US asked for anti-trust exemption to negotiate with social platforms, and Facebook has reportedly stepped up and made its plans clear.
According to Facebook's Campbell Brown, as per a report by TheStreet, the company plans a subscription-based news product. It plans to begin testing later in October. It will be built atop Facebook's Instant Articles. Apart from taking readers to the publisher’s home page, it will put up a paywall that will ensure these readers become subscribers once 10 articles are accessed.
However, the report adds that the plan for a paywall has been in the pipeline for some time now. It is basically to appease publishers/news organisations.
This would also mean another mode of revenue for Facebook.
