The Tamil Nadu government has decided to introduce smart cards among school students. According to the Tamil Nadu Education Minister K A Sengottiyan, this will help to check the attendance of the students. In an event in Erode, the minister said that even the parents can keep track of their children. Attending the programme, the minister also said, "A chip would be attached in the smart card which when examined show the attendance of students in the school. With this, the parents could verify if their children were attending the school."

According to a report by the Indian Express, three institutes-Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Bombay Scottish School, and Jamnabai Narsee School introduced the smart cards. The report also said that with the smart card, students can gain access to restricted areas and can pay for canteen meals easily. After Narendra Modi's push for digital economy, the CBSE had all its affiliated schools last December to start collecting fees online or in cashless mode from the next quarter commencing from January next year.

In a letter to the schools, CBSE secretary Joseph Emmanuel had said that the benefits of the cashless transaction will help in the speedy collection of examination fee, affiliation and various activities including payment to its examination functionaries. In a recent development in July this year, the Government Higher Primary School at Hale Kesare village became the first school in Mysuru district to use a mobile app for recording students' attendance.
