Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Jailed for 26 years Murugan is joined by wife Nalini in indefinite fast

Murugan, jailed for 26 years in the Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case, had started an indefinite fast unto death on August 18. He is demanding his immediate release. Sources said that he had lost all hope of getting released after spending 26 years in jail.

Both V Sriharan aka Murugan and Nalini Murugan are life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Meanwhile,  Prisons ADGP C Sylendra Babu visited Murugan at Vellore Central Prison urging him to end the fast. Nalini Murugan is considered to be the first woman to serve the longest jail term in India.

Nalini is said to have knocked the doors of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, seeking its intervention in urging the Indian government to release her from prison as she had already spent 26 years in jail.

In the petition sent to the High Commissioner of UNHRC in Geneva, she complained that she was facing discrimination by the hands of the Indian government and the Tamil Nadu government for "more than 16 years since I had become eligible for release from prison as early as 2001.”

She had also said in the letter, "At the time of my arrest on June 13, 1991, I was pregnant and gave birth to my daughter in prison in 1992. My daughter now lives abroad at her paternal uncle’s house in the United Kingdom. I am the only woman prisoner in the country who has spent more than 26 years as a life convict."
