Police indicted for misusing the law for revenge

Raju, a Hassan resident was illegally detained at a police station and thoroughly caned by a revenge-seeking police officer.

The State Human Rights Commission, however, learnt of the indiscretion and has come down heavily on the policemen involved.

The commission has ordered that a penalty of Rs. 1.78 lakh be paid to the aggrieved person; the fine would be deducted from the salaries of the sub-inspector and the two constables who were involved in the vendetta.

The sub-inspector and two constables of a Police Station in Hassan allegedly tortured the innocent man by embroiling him in a fake case for three months.

Meera Saxena, the Adhoc Chairperson of State Human Rights Commission, Karnataka State, in her order said, “Police personnel when in their department uniform should behave like soldiers protecting the interest and welfare of the citizens.”

Police personnel behaving in an uncivilised manner has spread fear and phobia among the common man. This is highly disgusting, the chair observed.

Here’s why the policeman bore a grudge against Raju

Raju, a native of Hassan bought a plot of land from Narasimha; their acquaintance, Manja, allegedly brokered the deal between the two.

Later, Manja and his friend Harish, a constable with Hassan Extension Police Station approached Raju and demanded Rs 5000 as commission for the deal.

A heated argument ensued and Harish, who was not in police uniform, claimed to have been manhandled.

Bearing a grudge after the altercation, Harish along with his colleague Madhu, approached Raju under false pretext, induced a hit Raju with his walkie-talkie and later registered an FIR of manhandling against Raju

Raju suffered severe bruises and blood clots when he was thrashed and so his brother appealed to the State Human Rights Commission.  The commission has now instructed District Police Authorities to investigate into case and submit their report.
