Ola and Uber are considered a necessity in Bengaluru, an ever-expanding metropolitan with not-so-adequate transport facility. This city has approximately 50000 cabs affiliated with Ola and Uber, and a large number of them are off-road due to the on-going . However, this has turned out to be a blessing for the city that is often criticised for having terrible traffic and growing pollution.

Here are the 5 ways Bengaluru is gaining from this indefinite strike called by the cab drivers in the city:

1.    Fewer vehicles on the road: A rare sight in Bengaluru roads wherein motorists can navigate quickly and reach their destination on time without wasting their time on the road. The strike has led to less traffic congestion and better rides for .

2.    Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation’s AC buses have experienced 30 percent more ridership due to the strike. Commuters are paying far less to travel in air conditioned vehicles.

3.    The strike of the cabbies has also validated the Citizens of Bangalore’s demand for more buses and given a push to the need of more buses to have better connectivity.

4.    Air pollution yet to be impacted: According to a leading national daily report Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KPCB) is studying the effect of the strike on the air pollution level. However, the chairman of the board, Lakshman, has been quoted as saying that as compared to the 66 lakh vehicle pollution the number of taxis is less.

Though 30 to 40 percent diesel taxis flout the pollution control norms according to the chairman, the strike will not improve the air quality of the city. As of now, there may not be a substantial impact on the air quality, but if the strike goes on for a longer period of time since it is indefinite, some improvement in air quality can be expected.

5.    The strike has brought the focus on the operation of the taxi aggregators, the plight of the cab drivers and also to the fact that some regulation is much needed in this growing and expanding industry of cab aggregators. From surge pricing to cap on minimum and maximum prices to ensure that traffic and pollution norms are followed by the cabs and their aggregators, a regulator is needed to keep a check on all of this.
