IIT Bombay student suicide: The city crime branch's special investigation team (SIT), formed to investigate the alleged suicide of IIT-Bombay student Darshan Solanki on the Powai campus, registered an FIR of abetment to suicide and under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, against an unknown person. The case was filed 47 days after Solanki reportedly ended his life. 

The 20-year-old Dalit woman had died at a Delhi hospital a fortnight after she was allegedly gang-raped at her village in Hathras. Three men accused were acquitted by a court in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday while the main suspect was convicted of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, officials said.

IIT Bombay student suicide: Darshan Solanki, a first-year BTech (Chemical) course student at the IITB, allegedly died by suicide by jumping off the seventh floor of a hostel building on campus on February 12. His family claimed he was discriminated against at the IITB as he belonged to the Scheduled Caste community and suspected foul play in his death.

IIT Bombay student suicide: In response to the recent alleged suicide of a Dalit student at IIT Bombay, CJI DY Chandrachud said that such incidents involving victims from marginalised communities are becoming more common.

'The panel is headed by Professor Nand Kishore, including SC/ST Students Cell members, faculty and students, a few student mentor coordinators, and the in-charge chief medical officer of IIT Bombay hospital,' said Institute Director Subhasis Chaudhuri.
 

On Sunday, Darshan Solanki (18) died after allegedly jumping from the seventh floor of a hostel building on the institute's Powai campus. Solanki, originally from Ahmedabad, was a first-year BTech (Chemical) student.

Recently, Delhi was shaken by the horrific murder of of a 27 year old woman, Shraddha Walker, by her live-in boyfriend Aaftab Poonawala who not only killed her in cold blood, but also chopped her body into 35 pieces, stored her remains in a refrigerator for months, and dumped them around the city.

In an affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, the Social Justice and Empowerment ministry has said that Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims cannot claim benefits to which scheduled castes are entitled to, and that there is unconstitutionality in the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order of 1950.

BJP's Atmaram Parmar won the byelection in the constituency. Sociologist Gaurang Jani claimed Dalits in Gujarat are a confused community as far as political affiliation is concerned. They are numerically not as sizable as many other communities and divided further in three sub-castes - Vankar, Rohit and Valimki.

Randeep Singh Surjewala slammed the Bommai government by highlighting the incident in which dozens of Dalit workers were allegedly assaulted and held captive at a Chikkamagaluru estate.

DICCI representatives claimed in a meeting with the Governor that the AAP government was apathetic about paying Dalit workers. Over 1000 Dalit workers employed by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to clean sewer lines in the national capital have not been paid in the last four years, according to the complaint.
