In bid to eliminate single-use plastic, Dehradun NGO recycles 6,772 million tonnes of waste in three years
The NGO has been working in plastic waste management in 30 states for the last 20 years for the unaware. They engage with local bodies and has been able to enhance source segregation by educating and building the capacity of waste workers.
In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative to eliminate single-use plastic by 2022, an NGO named Indian Pollution Control Association (IPCA) in Uttarakhand's Dehradun has recycled 6,772 million tonnes of plastic waste in three years.
According to media reports, an NGO official said that as a state, Uttarakhand has become ecologically sensitive as plastic waste is bound to become more problematic with an increase in urbanisation and tourist activities.Â
The official also informed that Dehradun contributes the highest plastic percentage in the waste generated by the entire state. He said that the city produces 327.9 tonnes of plastic waste per day, increasing to 584.051 tonnes per day in the coming years.He said that by adopting an inclusive model for plastic waste management in Dehradun, the authorities have collected, segregate, and recycled 6,772 MT of plastic waste in the city since 2018.
Out of the total, 3,555 million tonnes of plastic waste was recycled in one year in 2020 and recorded a growth of 50 per cent.
