Mekedatu Dam project: Karnataka MPs protest in Parliament

Karnataka MPs staged a protest in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Thursday morning demanding the implementation of the Mekedatu Dam project.

Members of Parliament from Karnataka state proposed to build a balancing reservoir on Cauvery river at Mekedatu, Ramanagara District to collect excess water from the Cauvery basin. The ministers held placards and shouted slogans. This project would generate electricity and supply drinking water to towns in Ramanagara and Channapatna sub-divisions. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members from the state demanded the Centre to grant permission for the implementation of the Mekedatu project. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu stands in opposition to this project by saying that this would deny them their share of water from the Cauvery river.
