Actor Upendra wins 12 year old legal battle over land

After 12 years of fight over a land that Sandalwood actor Upendra had purchased near Tavarakere in Bangalore South, has finally been deemed legal by a divisional bench of High Court on Monday.

Way back in 2005, 'Uppi' aka Upendra had purchased 17 acres and 10 guntas of land at Byalalu village near Tavarekere. During the purchase, he had claimed that his income from non-agricultural sources was less than Rs 2 lakh per annum. The actor had raised a loan of Rs 35 lakh from Karnataka bank to purchase the land.

But the local assistant commissioner had objected to it claiming that Upendra's income from non-agricultuarl sources was more than Rs 2 lakh and hence it was violation of Karnataka Land Reforms (KLR) Act to purchase the land. The actor was asked to surrender the land to the government, reports Bangalore Mirror.

However, Upendra approached the Karnataka Appellate Tribunal with his objections but the tribunal dismissed his case. He later reportedly approached single-judge bench of the High court and the court in March 28, 2016 ruled in favour of the actor. The court had pointed out that the authorities took up the issue over two years after the actor had purchased the land. Also, it said that as per the amended KLR act, the purchase of land was legal, reports Bangalore Mirror. Upendra has built a farm house, quarters for labourers and a temple on the land.
