Kerala DGP Sheikh Darvesh Sahib issues strict guidelines for cops
Sheikh Darvesh Sahib was appointed as Director of the General Police of Kerala on June 27. This is his first circular after assuming the office as state's police chief.
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala's new Director of General Police (DGP) Sheikh Darvesh Sahib on Thursday released a new circular to the police department for addressing public grievances. The circular stated that the individuals attending the police station shouldn't be forced to wait unreasonably long to speak with the relevant police officer. In order to obtain the police station's services as quickly as possible, the station house officer must make sure to do so. Experienced officers should be sent to meet the complainants in person if the SHO is not available.

According to the circular, a receipt must be provided as soon as the complaint is received. The complainant should be informed of the identity of the officer assigned to look into the cognizable or preliminary complaint. The complaint should receive an appropriate response following the conclusion of the investigation.
Here is what the circular states:
If the complaint is cognizable, a case should be registered immediately and a copy of the FIR should be given to the complainant free of charge. If the accused have been arrested while investigating the case, the complainant should be informed about it. Once the investigation is completed and the final report is submitted, the same should be communicated. Senior citizens, women, children and other disadvantaged groups arriving at the police station should be given special consideration and their needs must be dealt with without delay.
When the public contacts the official mobile number of the police officers, they should be treated with courtesy and understand their needs and take appropriate action. Police officers must accept calls on official telephones at all times except in unavoidable circumstances. The District Police Chiefs and Unit Heads will ensure that these instructions are strictly followed. The state police chief also suggested that action should be taken against the defaulting police officers.
The police officers have already been instructed to behave respectfully and politely with those who come to the police station for various purposes and those who have to interfere during official duties. But the state police chief stated that he has noticed lapses on the part of the police officers in terms of compliance. Dr. Sheikh Darvesh Sahib, the state police chief, urged his officers to take extra care to avoid getting involved in illegal activities and criminal activity.
