Jagan Reddy booked for controversial remarks against Chandrababu Naidu

Jaganmohan Reddy, the YSR Congress President, was booked for reportedly making objectionable comment against the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The comments were made during the campaign for the by-election to the Nandyal Assembly Constituency.

The charges were levied based on a letter by Returning Officer and district Joint Collector Prasanna Venkatesh. Incidentally, the Nandyal police booked the Leader of Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly under sections 188, 504 and 506 of the IPC and section 125 of the Representation of People's Act (RPA), according to a report by moneycontrol.

The above-mentioned IPC sections relate to disobedience to order promulgated by public servant, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace and criminal intimidation. Also, the RPA section relates to encouraging enmity between classes during the election. The bypoll in Nandyal took place today.

What exactly happened

During a campaign early this month, Jagan was seen backing his party candidate  Silpa Chandra Mohan Reddy in Nandyal and while doing so, he was heard saying, "There is nothing wrong in shooting a person like Chandrababu Naidu who did not honour even one of the promises made". In a separate incident, he also replaced the word 'shooting' with hanging while lashing out at the chief minister. Following this, the TDP lodged a complaint against Jagan, based on which the EC directed the returning officer to file a case against the opposition leader.

Speaking to the PTI, the joint collector said, "As per the EC directions, I wrote a letter to the police today to file a case." Meanwhile, Rayalaseema Zone Inspector General of Police Sheik Mohammad Iqbal said that a case has been registered against Jagan under relevant sections and an investigation was launched. According to official sources, Jagan may soon be arrested since it is a criminal offence.
