After drawing flak and sharp criticism over Prime Minister Narendra Modi temple in Aundh, the bust of the Prime Minister has been removed from it.

BJP worker Mayur Munde, who built the temple, could not be reached for comments on what prompted him to remove the bust.

The saffron party also pulled up the worker, while the NCP leaders took potshots at BJP and said they were “disappointed” that the bust was removed.

“Optimism had prevailed in the city that now (after construction of the temple for Modi), the fuel prices would come down, inflation would dip and people will get Rs 15 lakh in their accounts. However, we came here and saw that the ‘god’ is missing from the temple. We had come to the temple and wanted to offer petrol, LPG and food items to the idol as their prices are running at an all-time high. We had decided to pray at the temple to bring down the prices of necessary items, provide employment to youths and solve civic problems of the city but we were disappointed that the bust of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been removed,” said city NCP chief Prashant Jagtap.

After installation, Mayur Munde had said the temple was his tribute to the prime minister who ‘built Ram temple at Ayodhya’.

"After becoming PM, Modi has done a lot of developmental work and dealt with issues such as the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Ram Mandir construction and triple talaq successfully," he had said.

“I am a follower of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and I worship him to take his blessings and the temple would also enable other followers to seek his blessings,” he had said.

As the controversy grew local BJP leaders distanced themselves from Munde and Opposition parties heavily criticised the saffron party.
