Orkut creator launches 'hello', calls it an upgrade

Long before Zuckerburg, a software engineer from Turkey, Büyükkökten,  gave kids of the 90s the gift of social media networking in the early 2000’s - Orkut.

If you were one of them, possibly you will never forget the joy of being on Orkut all day, chatting with friends on scrapbooks.

Now, Büyükkökten is hoping to bring back a similar pleasure under a new name - hello

In a blog post, Büyükkökten said: "In 2014 when Google announced that Orkut would be shutting down, it was a sad moment for us. Orkut had become a community of over 300 million people and was such an amazing adventure for all of us."

Büyükkökten claims that hello would be similar to his first social network, claiming that it was built on "loves and not likes".

He explained the reason behind the name 'hello': "hello connects us all. Think about it: you can say "hello" in any language, and people will understand. 'Hello' is probably the most widely spoken word in the world after "Okay." Aló, halo, ʾāllo, alô, hallo, alló, hello. Fear and hatred have no place when you make such a simple and friendly gesture to someone else. So come, join me, and make some new friends. Say hello, and love your world."

The new platform is expected to be launched by the end of this month as a mobile App.

However, this time around Büyükkökten won’t have a monopoly. He will have to compete with its prime competitors like - Facebook. One wonders how much love they will have for him this time around.
