Millions of iPads will be dysfunctional after Apple launches the iOS 10. The company has announced that it will roll back support for the iPad 2, iPad 3 and iPad mini.

According to a report published in ZDNet, 40% of the total number of the existing iPads will stop functioning after the launch of Apple’s latest Operating System.

The iPads which are slated to be outdated will also become dysfunctional as they will no longer receive security updates.

If Apple’s new trick works at all and customers decide to upgrade their iPads on a mass scale, it will be one of the largest-ever sales strategies by the company.

The experiment can, however, also backfire for tech giant given the current market scenario - where a large number of the variants of tablets being offered at much lower prices and with comparatively more functions.Â

Among the devices to become obsolete, the iPad2 was sold from 2011 to 2014 and had a market share of 17% as compared to other Apple iPads sold in the same period.

While the company has decided to call off support for selective iPads, customers retain the choice on whether to upgrade or not.
