Revise GST on these 40 items: Tamil Nadu Finance Ministry

  • The state government of Tamil Nadu is said to have appealed to the Central government to provide support to the firecracker industry.

Post the implementation of GST or the Goods and Services Tax, Tamil Nadu has been demanding a reduction in the tax rates of 40 items, which include the tax rate for job works. According to Tamil Nadu Finance Minister D Jayakumar, the state government appealed to the Fitment Committee that the firecracker industry needed support since it employed 8 lakh people in the state, and which has around 1,170 of the total 1,221 production units that are micro industries. All of them will be hit by the 28% tax and that a downward revision should be considered. 

He further added that matchsticks made of wax and others should be brought under the same GST rate. The government has also sought the reduction of taxes of wet grinders from 28 percent to 12 percent, in which biscuits have been taxed at Rs 100 per kilogram at 5 per cent and above Rs 100 per kilogram at 18 per cent. The price of compressor, steel, plastic furniture have been requested to be reduced from 18% to 12%. Electric wires for household and farmers from 28 per cent to 12 per cent, non-air conditioned restaurants at 5 per cent and air conditioned restaurants at 12 per cent etc. 

It has also been requested that educational institutes and life insurance services should be exempted from taxes. 20 litre drinking water cans, idli and dosa batter, fishing nets, spectacles and accessories and handloom and power loom weaving works, all have been requested to be exempted. Groundnut candies also should have reduced GST from 18% to 5%, along with reduction in the price of unbranded candies and pickles to five percent. The finance minister has also sought the exemption of silk clothes and ornaments  made of silver and others.
