Cauvery belongs to Tamil Nadu, prove ancient literature

  • A literary appreciation event was held, featuring the great epic Silapathikaram of Ilango Adigal.
  • The word ‘Tamilagam’ (Tamil Nadu) is first spotted in the epic Silapathikaram.
  •  The credits for uniting the Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas would go to Ilango Adigal.
Ilango Adigal has already enlightened the Tamil people that we have the right over Cauvery

By reading Ilango Adigal’s Nadanthai Vazhi, one can understand that the Cauvery belongs only to the Tamil people.

In Thanjavur, on Friday, a literary appreciation event was held, featuring the great epic Silapathikaram of Ilango Adigal. The event was named as ‘Tamilai Thurukaatha thuravi’ (A hermit who did not renounce Tamil). Debuting the literary appreciation, Poet Vairamuthu said, I hail from Pandya Naadu (Tamil Nadu) and I am debuting the literary appreciation in this Chola Naadu (Thanjavur), on the epic written by the Ilango Adigal of Chera dynasty. I could not be more proud.

The word ‘Tamilagam’ (Tamil Nadu) is first spotted in the epic Silapathikaram. Sangam literature carries no such record.  The credits for uniting the Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas would go to Ilango Adigal.

Ilangovadikal is the one who can take the credit for creating a common land called Tamil Nadu, exclusively for the Tamils and the Tamil language by uniting the three kingdoms Chera, Chola and Pandya

After we die, it is not just the children we leave behind on this earth. Literature, culture, Writings, inscriptions and tradition are the foot prints that we actually leave behind. We have a great responsibility to save them for the next generation. History should never be compared to a dry repository. History does not belong to the past because it is always an extension of a new beginning, from an end. It is an extension of life and tradition. I am an atheist, but I will never let go of Thanjai Peruvudaiyar Kovil, Mamallapuram sculptures, Meenakshi Amman temple, Ekambaranathar temple, and the great epics such as Thevaram Thiruvasagam and Thirumurai.

We are the leftovers of the past. You, Tamil, Tamil Nadu and I are made of past.

Ilango Adigal is identified as a prominent person in the history of Tamil Literature. Thiruthakka Thevar wrote Samana Kaapiyam(Jainism). Chithalai Chathanar wrote Powtha Kaapiyam (Buddhism). Sekkizhar wrote Saiva Kaapiyam( Shavism) and Kambar wrote Vainava Kaapiyam.

No traces of religious connotation would be found in Silapathikaram. It is surprising to know that Silapathikaram has recorded secularism in the early period of second century BC. No woman, in other epics had boldly fought like the epic character Kannagi.  In Silapathikaram, Nadanthai Vazhi of Cauvery has been described so elegantly. Don’t study Silapathikaram just for experiencing the literature. It is the extension of our rights.

By reading, Nadanthai Vazhi, one can understand that the Cauvery belongs only to the Tamil people.
