Tamil nadu observes bundh today

Yesterday, the Supreme Court had clearly instructed both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu not to stage protests and disturb law and order situation. Despite the instruction, Tamil Nadu has decided to go ahead and observe a bandh today from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. claiming that the water share ordered by the Supreme Court is not sufficient for its samba Crop.

Around 450 KSRTC buses go to Tamil Nadu, every day. But today there will not be buses plying between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Public transports, including autos and cabs, will not be available today in TN. Around 16,000 schools, 21 lakh shops and 4,600 petrol bunks across the state will be closed today. KSRTC has stopped its buses from Thursday itself.

Meanwhile, 11 lakh goods lorries, 55,000 sand lorries will not come on the streets. Vijaykanth’s party DMDK and Congress have supported the bandh.

Though the bandh has been declared in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka police have taken every measure to sustain law and order in the state. It has instructed all the police officers to cancel the leaves of cops as the bandh may affect Karnataka also. A total of 14 DCPs, 21 ACPs, 5,000 policemen and 1,400 para military police have been deputed to maintain law and order.

Karnataka DGP Om Prakash has spoken to the DGP of Tamil Nadu and asked for the protection of Kannadigas residing in Tamil Nadu.

Pro-Tamil organisations had called for another bandh in Tamil Nadu 15 days ago, but only seven districts had responded to the call. But today’s bandh, sources say, has garnered statewide support. It is said that even the Tamil Nadu government has given passive support for the bundh.
