Stung by the riots over the Cauvery issue, the ruling Congress government in Karnataka has now pointed fingers at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for orchestrating the violence with the support of the Modi government at the centre.

The violence, which first started as few stray incidents, snowballed into riots with protesters crying foul against the Supreme Court’s verdict in which it modified its earlier order and told the Karnataka government to release 12,000 cusecs of water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu on daily basis till September 20.

The agitation in the state is estimated to have cost Karnataka a loss of around ₹22,000-25,000 crore with the wide-spread agitation hitting transport services and businesses, Assocham said. The Asshocham report also said that the violence in the state capital Bengaluru has "severely dented" the image of Karnataka.

During the Congress workers’ meeting, it was alleged that RSS is responsible for the riots and violence in the state. The congress workers urged the Home Minister Dr G. Parameshwara to conduct a thorough investigation.

“One of our workers has alleged that RSS was behind the riots and violence and requested the government to probe the matter. Our workers have overheard many rumours that RSS played a major role in triggering the riots. We will verify the matter” Dr G Parameshwara told reporters.

Even senior congress leaders VS Ugrappa and HM Revanna said that they believe that the BJP government in the centre had a role to play.

“The BJP which is in power in the centre, is manipulating the issue politically. All the Karnataka MPs of BJP party are defending the Prime minister Narendra Modi and are saying that his intervention is not necessary. Even PM is completely silent about the Cauvery dispute” said VS Ugrappa.
