Peaceful Tamil Nadu bandh yesterday, life hardly affected

  • Tamil Nadu was only partially affected by yesterday's bandh.
  • Transport services were barely affected and life was close to normal
  • Blocking of roads and rail roko movements were not particularly successful either
Peaceful bandh in the middle of good vigilance

Tamil Nadu had called for one day bandh to protest the Cauvery verdict-related violence that took place in Karnataka over the past week. The bandh was received with mixed reaction from Tamil Nadu citizens. The intensity was low as the SC had ordered states to take strict measures to maintain law and order situation.

Though many shops, restaurants and petrol bunks were closed, some private buses and auto rickshaws were found on the roads. Government buses, trains and flights ran as usual. Schools, colleges and government offices were open.

All political parties including DMK, Congress, BJP, MDMK, PMK, TMC, and CPI supported the bandh. Some farmer’s organisations tried to stage a ‘rail roko’ at Egmore but the police controlled the mob and arrested the leaders including DMK leader MK Stalin.

Kannimozhi, DMK MP urged the government to call for an all-party meeting and staged a protest against the government. The police arrested her and her supporters.

The bandh was successful in Tirupur, the hub of textile industries and other small and middle-scale industries. More than 30,000 factories were closed.

One of the protesters had set fire to himself on Thursday. He was immediately admitted to the hospital. But he didn't survive and he died on Friday.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa has instructed to release water from the Mettur dam for the samba crop from September 20.
