Party over BBMP works overtime to clear littered streets

While most of Bengaluru is just waking up from hours of New Year celebrations, one group of people are being stretched to breaking point cleaning up the huge amount of garbage left behind by revelers — the much-maligned sweepers of the BBMP.

A large number of water and beer bottles, food packets and even slippers could be seen on January 1 at sites of celebrations in MG Road and Brigade Road, where thousands had gathered to ring in 2017. Revelers stayed till the wee hours of January 1 at MG Road, Brigade Road, Church Street, Anil Kumble Circle and other places.

In many places, police had to resort to a lathicharge after crowds broke through barricades. This resulted in a large amount of footwear being left behind, in addition to half-burnt cigarettes, beer and water bottles and food plates.

“They (revelers) are supposedly educated but they have left garbage and waste in a huge amount. They blame us if we delay to clean their garbage,” rued Gangamma, a daily wage labourer with the BBMP.
