High Court stays NGT ban on diesel vehicles in Kerala

The Kerala High Court on Friday stayed the order of National Green Tribunal (NGT) Circuit Bench banning diesel vehicles of more than 10-years-old in six municipal corporations in the state.

The court had on 27 May partially stayed the NGT order by allowing the registration of diesel vehicles above 2000 cc that should have been stopped as per the tribunal verdict. With the new order on Friday, the High Court has completely stayed the order to restrict diesel vehicles in Kerala.

The stay order on Friday was given after considering a petition filed by Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).  The Circuit Bench order was supposed to come in force on 23 June.

The NGT had ordered to restrict all light and heavy diesel vehicles over 10-years-old from plying in the cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur and to impose a fine of Rs 5000 per violation. 


 
The order caused widespread concern and confusion among the public. It also threatened the most as KSRTC a good number of its buses are more than 10-years-old. It also
