With the arrest of a lady and four youths from KR Puram Railway Station for possessing 13.5 kilos of ganja worth ₹10 lakhs, the police say Bengaluru East and Bengaluru North are under the scanner.

The latest incident was enough for the Drugs and Narcotics wing of City Crime Branch (CCB) to activate their network to find out whether this deal has any link with the dreaded Ganja Godmother Farida’s family network. In the recent times, the Marijuana trade is thriving in the city, and the authorities are suspecting involvement of the infamous Ganja Godmother Farida’s family network.

Venkatesh, Police Inspector of the Chikkaballapur Station who nabbed Farida in 2011, says, the Women, her husband Safiualla and two children, are said to having a link in marijuana trade in Bengaluru.

The woman with over 30 years of experience in Marijuana trade was well-known among college goers. Students from top Medical College, Engineering and other colleges were her clients.

"Arrest of few youths from a top medical college from Sadashivanagar Limits led to information about Farida. As she has over 10 cases alone in connection with ganja smuggling and selling, she become the first women in state to be declared as 'Goonda' as Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders, Gambler1985, Goondas (Immoral Traffic Offenders, Slum-grabbers and Video of Pirates) Act 1985 was imposed on her," said Venkatesh.

During interrogation in 2015, she revealed that in last 35 years no one arrested her due to her good network in police as well as political circles. With these kinds of influences, she groomed her two sons Mubarak and Jamshed into taking up the crime.

"Her sons too have many cases against them in Yeshwanthpur police station, and they too are into ganja trade. Places like Hoskote, Anekal, Odisha, Krishnagiri, in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are the places where this family has connections with marijuana growers," he added.

“As the entry from Hosur can be risky, the smugglers used their network and smuggled marijuana by mixing them with the green vegetables. Also, to enter the city, they used Bagalur, Sarjapura and Hoskote Road. If the drug has to be smuggled from Andhra Pradesh or Odisha, the peddlers use Chikkabalapura Route," said a Police Inspector attached with CCB.

Farida died recently, but her sons are still active in the business. "The duo has no work or a reputed profession, yet has a lavish lifestyle, and this led to suspicion. The police are also keeping an eye on the students who used to come to Farida's family to get Marijuana, and this lead led to arrest of Mubarak and Jamshed. However they were released on bail," said Venkatesh.

Chikkaballapur Deputy Superintendent of Police, Purushotham, who was the inspector at Yeshwanthpur police station during the arrest of this ganja family in 2015 says, “The mother died recently, and her son Jamshed has become notorious ever since. Jamshed was involved in a shootout case in Shivajinagar after he opened fire at another rowdy last year," said Purushotham.

"From being peddlers to becoming rowdy elements is a lethal combination and this factors will increase their network further. Although Jamshed is in Jail, but it is said that he is operating from prison and using his network to hold the drug mafia market in Bengaluru North and Bengaluru East," said a source.

The marijuana is sold in packets, each packet of 10 grams is sold for Rs 300 and students are the potential buyers. The peddlers usually have links with paan shops close by to colleges, and from there the buyers are identified.
