Kerala, the state with highest sex ratio in India has decided to establish a women's police battalion. The move aims to increase the strength of women police force in the state by 15%. The unit will have its headquarters in Kannur or Thiruvananthapuram.

The state cabinet headed by Chief Minister has decided that the battalion will have 451 positions. This includes one commandant, 20 havildars, 380 constables, five drivers, ten technical staff, one armourer sub-inspector, 20 camp followers, an administrative assistant, junior superintendent, cashier, office attendant and eight clerks and two typists. 

The sex ratio in Kerala is 1048 females to 1000 males compared to the national ratio of 940 females per 1000 males. As per 2011 Census, the population of Kerala is 3.34 crore of which 17, 378, 649 are women while 16, 027, 412 are male. 

The cabinet also decided to make 74 appointments in state police under sports quota, of which 12 will be under athletic women category. There will be four posts each for female, and male basketball players and six posts have been earmarked for football, 12 each in swimming, handball and water polo and ten under judo. 

The meet also sanctioned additional posts in eight coastal police stations. As many as 157 physically challenged persons working on a temporary basis will be re-employed.
