Kerala police to impart self defence training for women

In the backdrop of increasing incidents of crimes against women and children, Kerala government has decided to open permanent training centres to teach kalari and martial arts. The force would provide free class to women of all ages. Students from class VIII can attend training class.

Institutes will be set up in all 19 police districts across the state. The state-level centre would be set-up at Trivandrum.

Kozhikode city police have already informed the government about their willingness to turn the top floor of its dormitory as the Institute. The training aims to equip women mentally and physically to tackle harassments and atrocities against them. Service of various Kalaris in Kozhikode and Pink Patrolling would also be made use of.

The 60 hour class consists of psychological tips and personality training to enhance confidence among women. The women will also gain awareness of pro-women laws.

The defence techniques taught at the centre will be easy and simple, in comparison to conventional martial arts like Kalari and Karate. Women of all ages will be able to learn the techniques within a short span of time, State Police Chief Loknath Behra said.

He said the institutes would be operational in a month.

Women police officers will give training. As many as 1,000 officers are given the training to impart classes. "The institutes will also offer to conduct training programmes at schools and colleges. Police will provide a composite training programme that includes various techniques of self-defence, including traditional methods," the DGP said.

Those who wish to attend training programmes can just walk in for registration. Girls from class VIII can attend classes.

Each training facility would cost ₹3 lakh to set up. The training centres are expected to be operational by February end.
