The entire country is after smartphones and mobile phone transactions. With demonetization and the Digital India drive, smartphones are fast becoming an integral part of people's lives.

But, a PSU in Kerala has banned smartphone and internet use of employees in office after 'realising' that it was the main reason behind pushing the unit into huge loss.

The management of Transformers and Electricals Kerala Ltd. (TELK) has directed nearly a thousand employees to shun smartphones while on duty. It also restricted use of internet in office computers. Instead, the company provided ordinary mobile phones free to its employees and brought everyone under a closed user group mobile tariff plan and prompted its employees to make use of intercom phone facility for internal communication. Internet restrictions are applicable to 150 computers in the company. Only the managing director and chairman of TELK are exempted from the restrictions in place.

A TELK official told Malayala Manorama that the employees are cooperating with the restrictions. The smartphone ban was brought in after the company realised that it was affecting the productivity, he said.

The TELK was a profit making PSU three years back but plunged into loss after that. The cumulative loss in 2014-15 was Rs.33 crores and next year it incurred a loss of over Rs.14 crores.

Will the smartphone ban save the loss-making PSU? Well, the employees are keeping fingers crossed.
