In Bengaluru, walking is faster than using your vehicle

  • The density of vehicles in the system has made movement nearly impossible.
  • At peak hours, the average vehicle moves at 4.5 km/h in many junctions.
  • However, an average human can easily walk up to 10 km/h casually.

In Bengaluru walking is faster than using your vehicle

The fact that traffic in Bengaluru is a nightmare is a common enough trope. However, perhaps to no one's surprise, actual studies have shown that in several places, it might actually be faster if you simply walked.

Mobility experts, who conducted the studies, discovered that in a few junctions and areas, walking gives you a better chance of reaching your destination within a time frame than a cab, bus, auto or two wheeler.

Now that average vehicular movement across the city during peak hours has come below an average human's walking speed of 10 km/h, it would seem pedestrians will have the last laugh against motorists in this city.

Ashish Verma,  Associate Professor Department of Civil Engineering,  IISC says that according to a study,  in places like the BTM Junction,  Electronic City road,  Hosur Road and KR Puram, vehicle movement in peak hours is a shockingly low 4.5 km/h. The increase in vehicles across the city has simply choked the entire the traffic system.                                                        -

V Ravichander,  Urban Expert says that the traffic mess has forced many techies and office goers to take up cycling to reach work. "Bad planning of the city and unchecked development has led to this pathetic situation. People prefer to walk as they can reach office faster than going in vehicles, " he said.

MZ Ali, a PR official for an American firm, confirmed the same, saying that traffic on Hosur Road will have a cascading effect on a number of junctions and it may have an effect right up to Richmond Road.

"I stay at Wilson Garden and have to visit clients in UP Nagar Main Road. Many times I have parked my car near Dairy Circle and walked as I find walking during peak hours faster than moving in vehicles, " he said.

Surely the time has come to decongest traffic by taking development projects before people give up even walking in Bengaluru and simply stay put wherever they are!
