Bengaluru traffic cops using body cameras

With traffic police contemplating on using sting cameras on its field staff, the questions are being raised about their efficiency. With over 3,000 traffic police personnel manning the City traffic, it was becoming difficult at few junction where the motorists would abuse the police under the influence of alcohol.

"At times there are allegations of our department officials misbehaving. Now that about 50 cameras will be rolled out in few station limits, the traffic constables can record the footage and to come out clean and also nail the traffic offenders," said R Hitendra, Additional Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City.

Each camera has the capacity of 10-hour recording, weights, 150 grams and can be hidden from the public when the constables wear it.

MN Shreehari Traffic says this is a very foolish concept as the there is no storage mechanism. "More than having an eye of traffic offenders, the traffic cops will have to be watched as most of the time they are not on the field,"

The experts observe that the protocol should be that citizen should have faith in the system that irrespective of good or bad action of the traffic police should be recorded and made available.

"The operation of these cameras will become a subject of debate as it may be paused or put off if the person is not honest. Hence a senior person should be monitoring the recording frequently, and the recordings should always be made available," said V Ravishander, Urban Expert.
