Even as politicians have sought to make light of incidents of in Bengaluru on New Year’s Eve, video footage has emerged of a young woman being groped and assaulted 50 metres from her house on the same night.

The video was provided to the Times of India by the owner of a CCTV camera installed near his residence in Kammanahalli in East Bengaluru. The incident occurred around 2.30 AM. The woman, who was with a girlfriend, was intercepted by two men on a scooter as she was stepping out from an autorickshaw. The assailants attempted to remove her clothes but the victim put up a fight, forcing them to flee. The victim claimed she may have been robbed in the assault.

‘Not going to police’
Reflecting the widespread sense of despondency, the victim had declined to go to police, telling friends that it would bring difficulty to her itself. The video footage was shared with police by the CCTV owner; the Banaswadi police have taken suo moto cognizance of the incident and filed a case. Police are currently examining footage from adjacent CCTV cameras to ascertain the registration number of the scooter, a Honda Activa.

Despite national condemnation, the police on January 4 said that examination of CCTV footage from celebratory events on MG Road and Brigade Road didn’t provide any evidence of mass molestation. The police have appealed to victims to come forward to register complaints. The Deccan Chronicle has reported that the police will release some footage (with women’s faces blurred) soon.
