Bengaluru demolitions: BBMP to provide temporary shelter to homeless

BBMP provides Temporary shelter for refugees

The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission has ordered the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to provide temporary shelters for those who lost their houses in the BBMP’s anti-encroachment demolition drive.

“All people who have lost their homes should be rehabilitated with shelter, food, drinking water, toilets and other basic needs. Before demolitions, authorities should give prior notice to people” the commission ordered.

The commission also reiterated that it was the responsibility of the state government to protect human rights at every level of administration.

N Manjunath Prasad, BBMP Commissioner, had called a meeting on Friday and instructed all the officers to comply with the order of the Human Rights Commission.

Shortly after the meeting, he met CM Siddaramaiah along with the Mayor and gave a detailed report of demolition operations.

Reportedly, the CM has instructed the BBMP to conduct demolitions on a priority basis, with areas most affected by rains given the highest priority when it comes to clearing encroachments.

The CM has also ordered income tax officers and sub-Registrars to be held responsible and prosecuted for encroachments, along with the engineers of the Urban Development Division of the BBMP.

The BBMP will resume its demolition operations from Tuesday, August 16, and is likely to take action against guilty officers.
