Taking the cue from the victory of the Jallikkattu agitation in Tamil Nadu, people of Kakkoor village in Kerala launched a movement demanding the lifting of restrictions imposed on Kalavayal, the traditional bullock car race and bull race festival of Kerala.

Last week, when the Jallikkattu agitation was on the boil in Tamil Nadu, the villagers of Kakkoor in Ernakulam, had taken out a rally in solidarity.

On Saturday, they organised a public meeting demanding a legislation similar that of the bill passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly   last week allowing Jallikkattu. Former minister Anoop Jacob MLA, who is in the forefront of the protests in Kakkoor, urged people across the state to join the stir.

Former Minister Ganesh Kumar and leader of Festivals Coordination Committee inaugurated the gathering and extended full support to the movement to legalise Kalavayal.

A delegation of legislators from the region had met the Chief Minister and submitted a memorandum to lift the ban on Kalavayal.

The Kalavayal festival, one of the biggest agricultural festivals of South India, has a history of over 125 years, the villagers claim. The bullock cart race and mud race of bulls were the most exciting part of the 4-day festivities.

The bullock cart race and bull race were banned along with Jallikkattu two years back. Though the organisers of the festival approached the High Court against the ban, their plea was rejected.
