The Village Cooking Channel (VCC) has become the first Tamil YouTube channel to cross one crore subscribers. It was launched in April 2018 and the creators received the 'Diamond Play Button' for achieving this feat. It is run by 75-year-old Periyathambi, who was a farmer and a caterer, and his grandchildren Ayyanar, Murugesan, Tamilselvan, Muthumanickam, and Subramanian.  After receiving the button, they uploaded a video of its unboxing, and the creators posted a video thanking their subscribers and YouTube. Later, Village Cooking Channel donated Rs 10 lakhs to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Public Relief Fund to help in the fight against coronavirus.
They posted authentic South Indian recipes cooked in a traditional village setting, and every dish they cook is made at least for 100 people. Then the food is distributed to charity homes or to the people in the villages.
According to media reports, Ayyanar said that they always have been taught to give, and we wanted to do something good. He hopes that their donation to the CM fund would help in battling with COVID and said the donation is on behalf of all viewers who showered them with love. Â Subramanian informed that they have agriculture work for six months, and the rest of the time, they did not have much to do, and that is when they decided to start the channel. That is when we decided to start the channel. He added that they felt so proud to be the first Tamil creators and called it a 'collective victory'.
Earlier, during the election campaign, the channel gained populartiy when Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi visited them. The number of subscribers increased from 30,000 to 40,000 per week post Gandhi's visit.Â
