'Blue whale' grips Kerala: Pinarayi urges Centre to ban game, but is it possible?

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday told the state Assembly that the LDF government will write to the Centre, seeking ban the infamous 'blue whale' game, which is feared to be finding popularity among youth in the state.  

Participating in 'blue whale' is suspected to have led to over 4,000 suicide attempts across the world, including of a teen in Mumbai last month.

"Four Kerala youths, who were picked up by the police recently, were found to have left their homes after getting influenced by this killer game. The need of the hour is an immediate campaign against this, which has already commenced in a small way in our state," the CM pointed out.

Pinarayi was responding to a submission moved by senior CPM legislator Raju Abraham who said that in Kerala alone there have been 2,000 downloads of 'blue whale'. The CM demanded that the government immediately intervene in the matter.

"After knowing the ill effects of this game from across the world, the Kerala police, educational institutions and other social groups have started a campaign in Kerala against this game. We will write to the Centre to see that steps are taken to ban this game," the CM said.

Kerala police had earlier issues a warning to parents to be more cautious about the activities of children, especially when they are using devices connected to the Internet.

How 'blue whale' game works?
'Blue whale' has tasks meant to be done within a period 50 days. Each task must be filmed as proof. In the initial stages, players get easy tasks such as watching horror films at night alone. The tasks then escalate to doing dangerous things such as harming oneself with a knife etc. The 50th and final task is attempting suicide.

What if you choose to quit?
Once you sign up for the game, you have to complete all 50 tasks. 'Blue whale' rules threaten to hack all personal accounts of the player and also misuse them if he/she quits the game in between. 

Why can't the game be taken down?
'Blue whale' has a strong cyber team behind it, making eliminating it from the Internet a difficult task. The game doesn't have a designated no app or website. You can play the game only if you go looking for it or someone who already plays invites you.
