The deceased's mother was handed over a bill of Rs 1.7 lakh by the hospital authorities, which was beyond her capacity. The policeman arranged for the money and helped her get her daughter's body back. He also paid for the last rites of the infant and performed them himself since there was no male member in the family to do so.
The death of a 5-year old girl who was sexually assaulted on Friday night was traumatising. But, her mother's plight after that deviated our minds to more grieveous issues like poverty that our society is infested with. After her death, the police shifted her body to get the post-mortem done and then brought it back to the hospital. A bill of Rs 1.7 lakh was handed over to the mother, which was beyond her capacity.
Stepped in Talagattapura police inspector, Ramappa Gutther, who with the help of a private firm helped the mother to get the body released. However, even that was not enough for the mother as she did not even have the money to transport the body to the crematorium and conduct the last rites. Ramappa, moved by the plight of the woman, collected some money from his colleagues and pitched in some money himself to take the body to the Banashankari crematorium in a hearse van.
They also sought help from an NGO who agreed to pay Rs 10,000 to the woman. Here came the third hurdle. When the crematorium asked for a male member in her family to perform the last rites, the woman broke down as her husband had died just 3 months back. The inconsolable woman was stabilised by the police officer who also offered to perform the last rites.
The officer was expected home to celebrate Gowri-Ganesha festival. However, he was happy to help this distraught woman, instead of spending time with his family.
