State pleads to reduce 20 tmc water to Tamil Nadu

The Cauvery Water Distribution Tribunal has made a major mistake in estimating the groundwater in the Cauvery valley, alleged State. The Supreme Court is hearing the applications submitted by the three states in the Cauvery basin Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, questioning the award issued by the Tribunal.

Senior advocate counsel for the State Shyam Diwan stated that according to a survey conducted in 1971 for the development program of United Nations, the groundwater in the Cauvery valley of Tamil Nadu was 129 tmc.  Subsequently scientists have reported that there is only 30 to 35 tmc water in the Cauvery valley in Tamil Nadu. However, Tamil Nadu government itself had stated that it had used 47 tmc of ground water.  But the Tribunal had come to a conclusion that there was 20 tmc.  Due to such baseless calculations Karnataka has lost 20 tmc of water.  Hence Diwan argued that out of 419 tmc that the Tribunal ordered to be released to Tamil Nadu 20 tmc must be reduced.

The State has asked for 40 tmc water for the entire Bengaluru by 2025.  But the Tribunal has sanctioned 8.7 tmc to the 1/3 rd of Bengaluru. Tribunal has kept the rest of Bengaluru outside the purview of Cauvery water.

Diwan appealed that the entire Bengaluru City should be brought under Cauvery basin and the Tribunal must increase the amount of water to Bengaluru.
