In view of the acute shortage of sand in the State, the State Government has decided to import sand from Malaysia at Rs 3500 per tonne. Speaking to media persons on Monday Law Minister T B Jayachandra said the government has decided to import sand from Malaysia at Rs 3500 per tonne and resort to need based distribution to public. The responsibility has been given to MSIL, reported Kannada Prabha.

The shortage of sand has caused the price to escalate to Rs 1 lkah per lorry load in Bengaluru. The sand traders are exploiting the consumers. The sand imported from Malaysia will cost Rs 3500 per tonne including transport charges, he said.

However, the imported sand will not be sold to builders and real estate companies. Instead, it will be rationed out to common public for constructions. There will be regulation sto control this. The construction should have all necessary permits. Building drawing, estimate, quantity of sand required should be submitted ands and procured, said Jayachandra.

Responding to a quiery about the distribution method and district level distribution, the Minister said it is to be decided after discussions.

An environment committee has been formed to permit quarries to sand mine at 2.20 cares next to a reserved forest area at district level. However, a state level committee is not yet formed. Hence it will be requested to form a State level committee, he said.
