Teachers use disabled, widow quota to save precious government jobs

  • A govt teacher in Davengere was caught wrongly claiming to be disabled in her job application
  • Officials are now widening their probe, to check if this is a larger trend in the state.
New scandal Teachers caught with fake certificates in Karnataka

In a strange incident, a government school teacher in Davengere district, Karnataka, seems to have gotten herself certified as 'handicap ' to get a government job. The teacher, of course, is not disabled at all.

The illegal scheme came to light last week after the matter came before HM Prema, Deputy Director of Public Institutions.

And according to sources,  Devika, a school teacher in Davengere city limits, was exposed by her colleagues, thanks to their internal rivalry.

"The teacher (Devika) had furnished her documents as 'normal' during Taluk level counselling. But in her District level counselling session,  she has certified herself a 'disabled'. This change was being probed, " said the source.

Confirming that teachers were indeed giving themselves fake certificates, DDPI of Davengere HM Prema said,  "This issue will now be probed by the medical board. The teacher has given some lame excuse, but I have referred the case to the medical board. A district level surgeon has been asked to study the case and file a report. However, the teacher will continue her services till she is proved guilty by the board,"

The Education Department, meanwhile, has taken up the case seriously and also has issued circulars to districts like Shivamogga, Haveri, Chikmamagaluru and Davengere to check each and every complaint regarding teachers giving false certificates.

"There are also reports about teachers posing as widows to get government jobs. The fellow staff in each institution are the ones who have brought this to notice by filing a complaint. This matter is serious, and a probe should be initiated, " a senior officer from education department said.
