Mangaluru Barge made to sink to claim insurance

Two days ago, the Coast Guard rescued 27 people from the sinking barge off Ullal coast in Mangaluru. The speculations are ripe that the boat was made to sink with a plan to claim insurance money.

The Coast Guard and the coastal security police had rescued four persons on June 3, and 23 persons who were on the barge were rescued on June 4.

The barge started sinking into the Arabian sea after the anchor broke, putting the lives of 27 people on the barge in danger. However, the probe is on about how the barge sank, and the primary investigation has given wing to the theory of trying to make the boat sink purposefully. The district administration and police have conducted separate probes in this regard.

The barge was made by NV Netherlands Company in 1982. The barge was supposed to move to Mumbai after the work to protect the land from sea erosion. Instead even after the work was completed the barge was still in Mangaluru.

The barge was made 35 years ago, and Dharti Chauhan Company had taken it on rent. There are speculations that the company had planned to sink the barge to claim insurance money.

However, the probe is on, and the exact reason for the barge sinking will be known only after the conclusion of the investigation. But if it was a ploy a serious question of the company playing with the lives of 27 persons arises.
