Graduate son asks father to clear criminal cases before enrolling for UPSC exams

Abdul Rehman, son of Tanveer who is serving a jail term for heinous crimes including attempt to murder, graduated with first class and is all set to take up Union Public Service Exam next year. But his unsaid condition to his father was not just to feel happy about his results but to make sure that he clears his criminal records and come out clean.

As soon as the results from St Joseph's Autonomous College was announced on May 12, Tanveer who voluntarily surrendered before court  said, "I do not want my son to face any humiliation and difficulties during his UPSC exam. During the interview, his background will be verified and I need to close all cases against me as soon as possible. Hence I have surrendered and appealed to court for speedy trail."

Rehman's father lived the life of a 'rowdy', going to jail, running from police for 40 years. He said he had 72 cases against him and after getting acquitted, now has only three cases-two attempt to murder and a threat case is pending in the court.

He said he realised the importance of a peaceful life when his son has come to jail to do a college project in humanities. "I could not face him. I ran away. But the jail superintendent asked me to relax and face my son. He asked me why I was involved in all crimes. I told him, I was involved in criminal activities for others but have realised my mistakes and now I am repenting," said Tanveer.

Two years ago, Tanveer's daughter Urvi Begum cleared her  CBSE exam with 81 per cent and is now in the 12th standard. She scored 66 per cent and wants to take up civil service exams.

Both brother and sister help each other in studies and prepare for exams. They were equally supported by their mother Famida Begum. During the absence of father, Famida Begum ensured that their father's past did not come to haunt them.

Looking at the children's enthusiasm to take up competitive exams, Tanveer who had come to the court to face trial the other day, was in tears and promised his children that he will not let his past life affect them.
