Girl students protest GST on sanitary pads

Women college students staged a protest and raised slogans against the Central Government for bringing sanitary pads under GST of 12 per cent at Basavanagudi in the City on Tuesday.  College students along with Janwadi Mahila Sanghatane raised slogans demanding exempting sanitary pads from GST, reported Kannada Prabha.

Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane state president K S Vimala addressed the gathering and said the percentage of women using sanitary pads is only 12 and the rest of the women continue to use unhygienic methods causing health hazards. The Central Government should actually address this issue and provide free sanitary pads to all women, instead imposing 12 per cent GST is shameful, she criticised.

She also condemned actor and BJP spokeswoman Malavika Avinash for her statement that the developed countries are dumping sanitary pads on to our country and stated that if Malavika is an eco friendly person she can discover eco friendly means to tackle the problem but not defend imposition of GST on sanitary pads.  Such flowery statements will not fetch votes she criticised.

The protesters signed a petition to the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley urging him to exempt sanitary pads from GST and posted it. District secretary K S Sharada, coordinator K Shrimathi and others were present.
