Free laptops for poor students studying in government colleges

  • All poor students of all communities with less than Rs 2.5 lakh annual revenue will be given free laptops.
  • First year medical, dental, engineering, polytechnic students in government and aided colleges.

Free laptops for all poor students

Poor students of all communities with less than Rs 2.5 lakh annual revenue, who are admitted into first year of medical, dental, engineering and polytechnic courses in government and aided colleges will be given free laptop by the government. The State government made this decision at a legislature meeting held on Wednesday. Speaking to newspersons, Law Minister TB Jayachandra announced that poor students of all communities will be covered under this scheme. However, students who have admission in private colleges will not be getting the laptops. Earlier, laptops were distributed only to students of government colleges. In the current year it has been extended to aided colleges students also. Hence 1.50 lakh students will benefit from the programme. To implement this scheme the State government is spending Rs 300 crore, reports Kannada Prabha.  

Besides, school and pre-university students who come under the Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions will be given Nirmala and Spoorthi Kits consisting uniforms, coconut oil and soaps from Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL) a State government undertaking. This scheme will cover 1.25 lakh students studying in 220 residential schools from 6th standard to 10th standard, said Minister Jayachandra.

Meanwhile, the State government has also decided to formulate a new policy for effective management of rural roads in the State. The government agreed to the recommendations made by a committee headed by Eshwar Khandre. Rural roads of a total 1,77,542 km will be developed according to the density of traffic. The government has also agreed that the constructors who build the roads should maintain them for a period of five years.
