Drunk cops punched and kicked us for speaking to DIG Roopa Convicts recount their horror

"We were woken up in dead of the night, and without any provocation, we were kicked, punched and pushed to the ground. Our desperate cries for help had no bearing on the police who had turned monsters," is how an inmate recounted the horror of that torturous night of July 16 at the Central prisons in Parppana Agrahara with Kannada Prabha.

"We were dragged one by one by former prisons chief superintendent Krishnakumar, other officials, K Suresh, Madhava Naik, jailors Meti, Mohan, Patil, Kattimani. They were drunk and thrashed us black and blue," the prisoner (whose name has been withheld from publishing) told Kannada Prabha.

At least 32 convicts were allegedly assaulted by prison superintendent Krishna Kumar and others for allegedly complaining about irregularities in the prison to former DIG (prisons) D Roopa.

It is reported that during officer Roopa's visit to the jail, the inmates complained that they were not allowed to go on parole and were treated inhumanly by the officers. But former chief superintendent Krishna Kumar prevented the inmates from complaining intervening all was fine the jail. "We are serving a sentence in the jail for many years, and Krishna Kumar did not like the fact that we were complaining against the jail to Roopa," reports Kannada Prabha quoting the prisoner.  Officer Roopa promised to look into their complaints and left the venue. But what turned out later for those inmates who brought out the issue before Roopa was unimaginable. "After the officer Roopa left, some inmates shouted slogans in support of Krishna Kumar. Later, some came in support of Roopa and this created a commotion as many prisoners exchanged blows. As the situation turned tense, the police caned the inmates to bring the situation under control," the inmate told Kannada Prabha

"We were asked to leave for our cells and we did so. However, late in the night, the police who were completely drunk pulled out us one by one and handcuffed us. Later, they unleashed on us the monster in them. Our cries for help fell on their deaf ears."

The police did not stop that. They shifted these prisoners to various jails in the state without informing their families. The serious allegations of human rights violations in the Parappana Agrahara prisons have now attracted the attention of National Human Rights Commission which has slapped a notice to the state seeking an explanation.
