DGP Rao denies corruption in prisons to take legal action against DIG Roopa

A major war of words has broken out between two senior police officers of Karnataka's prisons over corruption in prisons.

A day after DIG Prisons Roopa made serious allegations of corruption in the Parappana Agrahara prison, DGP Prisons Satyanarayan Rao has outrightly denied these allegations terming it as baseless and wild allegations.

Speaking to media persons, Rao lambasted Roopa for alleging special treatment to jailed AIADMK leader Sasikala. "No preferential treatment has been given to Sasikala. Whatever she has said in her letter is baseless. In fact, we are not even allowing MPs and MLAs from Tamil Nadu to meet Sasikala and the two other associates at the Parappana Agrahara," Satyanarayan said.

On allegations that Sasikala bribed prison officials with Rs 2 crore to get a special kitchen for herself, Rao simply demanded proof from his junior officer. "Forget taking money from convicts, I have not even touched a biscuit from prisons," Rao claimed.

He further went on to say that the allegations of drug addicts in the prisons are nothing new. She has not made a new discovery. "Majority of the new convicts or undertrial are drug addicts. We conduct health check up on such convicts and there is nothing new in her allegations," Satyanarayan Rao said.

He further said that she could have discussed the issue with him instead of going public with her complaint. "Moreover, she has sent the complaint copy after my working hours. She has not brought the issue to the notice of other senior officers. Instead, the issue directly reaches media," Rao said. He told media persons that he will sue DIG Roopa for making such baseless allegations.

Meanwhile, DIG Roopa too told media persons that the issues she has raised are true and the government can fact find her allegations, reports Suvarna News.

It appears the bone of contention between the two officers lies in a notice that was served to DIG Roopa by Rao. Rao had issued show cause notice to Roopa for making prisons information public and also for being absent to chief minister's programme, reports Kannada Prabha quoting Rao.

Meanwhile, Rao is due for retirement this month end, reports Kannada Prabha.
